The Myth of the Solopreneurship Capping Your Financial Potential

The Story We Were Sold

Start a business. Be your own boss. Enjoy freedom and financial abundance. It’s a beautiful story, especially for heart-centered founders who want to make an impact. But there’s a part nobody mentions: solopreneurship has a natural ceiling, and the research has been showing it for years.

Myth #1: You Have the Capacity

Every business runs on eight core areas, from leadership and messaging to sales, delivery, finances, and operations. When you’re the only one, something always gets neglected. Spend a week on marketing and your client work suffers. Focus on clients and your finances fall behind. It’s not a discipline problem. It’s a capacity problem, and it makes the whole thing feel heavy because you’re holding it all together alone.

Myth #2: You Should Do What You’re Capable Of

Being able to do something is not the same as being the right person to do it. I have a finance and accounting degree, and one of my first hires was still a bookkeeper and fractional CFO. Why? Because my energy belonged on revenue-generating work and leading the vision. Knowing the difference between what you can do and what you should do is one of the most important CEO skills there is.

Myth #3: The Money Will Come

Here’s the number that gets me every time. According to IRS data, the average solopreneur earns roughly $50,000 a year, and that figure has barely moved in five years. Yet businesses with three to five people bring in over $300,000. That’s not simple multiplication. Three people at $50K is $150K, and five is $250K. The extra growth comes from added skills, capacity, and infrastructure working together.

What To Do Instead

This isn’t about hiring blindly. It’s about intentional planning: knowing which roles shift your business model, which partnerships open new revenue, and how to build a structure that supports both your mission and your life.
